Q: Why would Don McLean have been a happy man on a chilly Friday night at Salt Lake’s Yuba Bharati Krirangan?

A: He could have belted out Starry Starry Night many times over.

For once, it wasn’t about which contestant to side with, which district to root for or which googly to play. Thousands braved the chill, hunger pangs and intermittent phases of boredom for that one magic moment — when Prosenjit, Mithun Chakraborty, Jeet and Sourav Ganguly came together for a picture-perfect pause at the Dadagiri grand finale. The time: 11.10pm. The place: Salt Lake stadium. The effect: madness.

For the starstruck Calcuttan, it was truly a moment to treasure. “We don’t always get the opportunity to share the same stage. This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment,” declared Mithunda, as the others smiled on.

If the curtain raiser — starting a good two-and-a-half hours behind schedule — had wowed the audience with a laser and fireworks display, it was the star power at the show — that had played host to Shah Rukh Khan in the Season One finale — that left them bedazzled.

First up was Jeet who vroomed onto the stage in a bike as the crowd — led by host Sourav himself — cheered on loudly. Looking dapper in an all-black ensemble, moustache and ear stud, Tolly’s action hero didn’t put a foot wrong when Sourav stepped aside and let Jeet play host.

Minutes later, it was time for Prosenjit, in a three-piece suit, to take centre stage. From grooving to Benche thakar gaan from his hit film Autograph to egging on the nervous contestants, Tolly’s hero number one was spot-on. He even got some good-natured ribbing from Sourav when he gave out one too many clues to a struggling participant! “Beshi boley phellam?” was the sheepish query from the man they call Bumbada.

And then it was time for Mithunda to make a grand entry. As I am a disco dancer played in the background, the Mahaguru strode in and the crowd from six to 60 went berserk. How did Mithun choose to introduce himself? As “Ayi yum Krishnan Iyer”, his iconic character from Agneepath.

And if it was the googly round, how could Mithun resist shooting off one at Sourav? “How will you hoist an elephant on a coconut tree?” A stumped Sourav struggled to come up with the answer to which Mithun promptly replied: “Plant a coconut seed, place an elephant on it and water the seed. The tree will grow and carry the elephant along with it!”

Not to be left behind, Sourav hit back with: “When can an ant injure an elephant?” As Mithun threw up his hands in mock surrender, Dada clean bowled him: “When the elephant’s name is Ant and the ant’s name is Elephant!” Ha! Ha! Ha!

At the end of six rounds, South 24-Parganas emerged champion, to take home a cash prize of Rs 20 lakh. And then came the moment that everyone was waiting for. The three heroes danced with abandon to the Teen Bhubaner Paarey evergreen hit Jiboney ki paabo na. And yes, Maharaj did join in too!

The Dadagiri grand finale airs on Sunday, February 13, at 7pm on Zee Bangla.
